The Hamsa

The Hamsa hand, or Chamesh hand as it is called in Hebrew, is an ancient amulet for magical protection from the evil eye.  It is known to draw positive energy, and provide happiness, riches and health.  The word Hamsa comes from a root meaning five, and thus the Hamsa includes five digits to symbolize the Creator’s protective hand.  The number five itself is also considered a protector.

Sometimes in a Sephardic household the symbol of a fish is also used to repel the eye; this originates from the Talmud where it is stated that fish are immune from the evil eye because of their life under water.

These designs look fantastic framed and matted in any color, and would make a beautiful and meaningful gift for any occasion!
